MORE ON AMTRAK P42 LOCOMOTIVE 5 Engine #5 remains active as of August 2024, one of three left in this group of ten. Three of the 1-9 single digit road numbers are still servicable today, with #3 not sighted in the last year. At last report, damaged #1 and #9 were stored at Beech Grove, Indiana. Wrecked #8 has been scrapped by now. In May 2023, #2 suffered a truck strike near Lakeland, Florida, and during July it moved to Beech Grove on CSX freight trains. Engine #6 was last reported in classroom use. As far as we know, Amtrak Genesis locomotives that had their paint refreshed during calendar year 2022 were: 114 126 137 142 146 153 166 199 and 201. None of the 1996-1997 group were done, which maybe tells us something. Unfortunately, #166 was quickly taken back out of service following its horrible accident (that should have been avoided had the contractors been flagging the crossing as the law and standard safety protocols require). In calendar year 2023, #68 ,#104, #157, #168, and #184 came out out in fresh paint, among others. #68 was in January, and #157 in February, losing its former "big game" logo. Engine #184 was sighted March 6, and the former 40th anniversary heritage paint unit was returned to standard livery. In April, it was #104's turn. On April 10 #168 moved Beech Grove to Chicago in fresh paint. Engine #5 has had three exterior stylings. It arrived in 1G platinum mist with reflectorized bicentennial striping, along with the rest of the 1996 order. A marketing change in 1997 resulted in 2G modified striping, into which #5 was redone along with the rest of the 1-28 road number group. The marketing program only lasted two years, and by 2000, locomotives were being updated again, without the stripes. Engine #5 received that 3G treatment in 2003. Our photos here show the three schemes. In 2024 there is a 4G livery as well, although so far #69 is the lowest number Genesis unit to receive it. Here are some of the sightings for #5.
