ACTIVE TRAIN ASSIGNMENTS FOR AMTRAK ROAD NUMBERS 134-168 P42 GENESIS SERIES FROM GENERAL ELECTRIC

General Electric produced only fifteen of P42's in 2000, road numbers #121 through #135. As happened in 1996, it was only a partial year of production. Engines #121 and #122 were insurance settlement replacements covering two P40's destroyed by a negligent truck driver in Illinois. These two showed August 2000 build dates, and were the only non-NEC P42's delivered new in 2G livery #101-111 had come that way from the 1997 production run). From the year 2000 were also #123-135, shipped to Amtrak in wide skirt band 3G livery, showing build dates of October, November, and December. Also in wide band 3G from 2001 were #136-168, which we have combined on this page.

So of the fifteen P42s from the year 2000, destroyed so far have been #128 and #133. Engine #125 is the only one so far to be restyled in 4G livery. For most of their early lives, #126, #127, and #128 were Wolverine commuters in Michigan. Today all are working on the east coast corridor, mostly running commuter trains, but once and a while going to and from Chicago on Lakeshore.

From 2001 production, there were two minor experior styling variations as compared to 2000 production. From road number #169 onward, the skirt band was narrowed. Also builder sticker locations were changed, and side logos removed. So, we have moved road numbers #169-207 of the 2001 production year to a separate page, while combining road numbers #134-168 here. Engines #121-133 are now dedicated NEC commuter engines, and seldom roam. So we do not regularly track them. Engine #126 is thought to be in in New Orleans, and has been seeing some non-revenue usage on Mobile test trains.

Below are recent train assignments for 134-169 road numbers in the 2000-2001 Amtrak Genesis order from the GE Transportation Division at Erie, Pennsylvania (#130-131-132 are in the east and #133 is retired). Engines #46, #85-132 and 145 are normally assigned in the northeast.

So far only #138 and #167 of this list have been redone in the new 4G livery (with #125 also, from the New England dedicated group). Most of the others from 2000-2001 are nationwide roamers, although #150 has been on AutoTrain recently. Siemen's Chargers started working with the remaining Genesis P40 on Autotrain starting in September 2024. To go to our photos of this group, start with 4rr.com/120/121_001.htm. ** #125 and #167 Repainted in 4G during 2024.

Of the fifteen P42's built in 2000, 13 still exist in service at Amtrak. That subgroup #121-132 is in northeast commuter service, except for #126 which is thought to have been stored in New Orleans since June.

Sixty P42's were built for Amtrak in 2001, making it the second greatest year for Amtrak P42 production after the 73 built in 1997. Either 56 or 57 of them are still available for service, depending upon how you account for #184 (##9700). It is about equally split between former wide bands and former narrow bands.

Special paint #145 is also assigned to the northeast corridor, the only one from the 2001 group so far. It often shows up on Downeaster and other New England trainsets. At the moment it has been working out of New Haven on the Vermonter and locals in Connecticut. Heritage unit #130 is also working RSR and once and a while on Lakeshore.

As of November 2, out of the 15 P42's built during the short production year of 2000, only #128 and #133 were known to be officially out of action due to wrecks. However, #126 had not been operating in a while. So, 12 of the 15 were thought to still be active at the start of November.

From the class of 2001, #141, #143, #149, #156, #162, #165, and likely #166 are known to be retired from the group tallied on this page. So 25 of the wide band 3G's were thought to be available at the first of the month of October (Amtrak's new 2025 fiscal year). In Chicago since October 8 are #138 and #139. Not seen since October 14 was #168 and #148 (also thought to be in Chicago), and special paint #164's last report was on the 17th at Lorton. Engine #151 has not reported out of New Orleans since the 18th. So there are at least six of the class of 2000 engines at least temporarily sidelined for maintenance.

Working relief on Autotrain is still #150, and #158 has shown up on Surfliners. Evidently #151 was in protection at Fort Worth for Heartland Flyer. It was added to train 22 when locomotive 53 experienced issues.

Some southeastern trains were affected in late September and October by hurricanes Helene and Milton.
