MORE ON AMTRAK 152 Here is road number 152 from the 2000/2001 Amtrak Genesis order from the GE Transportation Division at Erie, Pennsylvania. It is still active in 2025. The year 2001 was particularly hard on P42's at Amtrak. In Utah, #143 and 149 were destroyed, while 76, 131, 151, and 163 were involved in catastrophic wrecks. Those latter four were ultimately repaired and returned to service. More recently, #156 is out of service. Serial numbers for 150-159 represent a group of ten that were all delivered originally in high skirt millenium paint. Steel noses were changed to the bolt-on variety over the intervening years, and the paint was converted to the low skirt variety. Builder stickers have been replaced over the years, now generally residing only on the engineer's side. Many other changes have taken place, including the addition of forward-facing cameras, and additional roof-top electronics. Of note, #156 was damaged in August 2010 in North Carolina, with front end and engineer side sheet metal repairs needed. It was moved to Beech Grove and chosen for a special 40 year anniversary throwback heritage paint job. It served for almost tenyears that way before it was again taken out of service in 2020 after a truck strike at Scott, Louisiana on the Sunset Limited. The red nose retro paint was intended to remind folks of Amtrak's early years, when hand-mke-down EMD cab units, built mostly in the 1950's, started to be restyled in Amtrak livery. For its 50th anniversary, the design was somewhat replicated again on P42 #161. Locomotive 157 wore a Disney "Christmas Carol" wrap in the Fall of 2009, and more recently a"big game" logo was applied in late 2018, and for five years advertised the Texas-Oklahoma football game in Dallas. The latter treatment benefitted the Heartland Flyer that runs between Oklahoma City and Dallas/Ft. Worth. The engine was repainted in 2023 without the logo, coming out of Beech Grove on February 13, 2023. It was involved with a garbage packer truck on May 25 at Smithson, Indiana on train 51. After that it was repaired and returned to service. In addition to 157 being wrecked, on June 5, 2023, #155 returned to Chicago from Beech Grove in a refreshed paint job. Meantime #150 was at the shop for over a month, possibly getting a brake job and maybe a repaint. As of February 2025, #154 is at Beech Grove, and #156 has never returned.
