MORE ON AMTRAK 157

Here is road number 157 in the 2000/2001 Amtrak Genesis order from the GE Transportation Division at Erie, Pennsylvania. As of August 2023 it was out of service due to a packer truck strike in Indiana on May 25, 2023. As a 24 year old unit, in a group gradually being replaced by newer equipment, it was not known for sure whether it would be repaired and put back into service. It had been refreshed in February, just three months prior to the incident, so there is a good possibility it may be getting a new nose cone for a return to operation. Indeed, it was repaired and returned to service in October 2023.

The year 2001 was particularly hard on P42's at Amtrak. In Utah, #143 and 149 were destroyed, while 76, 131, 151, and 163 were involved in catastrophic wrecks. Those latter four were ultimately repaired and returned to service. More recently, #156 and #157 are out of service. Coincidentally, both of those had special paint or wraps at one time or another.

Serial numbers for 150-159 represent a group of ten that were all delivered originally in high skirt millenium paint. Steel noses were changed to the bolt-on variety over the intervening years, and the paint was converted to the low skirt variety.

Builder stickers have been replaced over the years, now generally residing only on the engineer's side. Many other changes have taken place, including the addition of forward-facing cameras, and additional roof-top electronics.

Locomotive 157 wore a Disney "Christmast Carol" wrap in the Fall of 2009, and more recently a"big game" logo was applied in late 2018, and for five years advertised the Texas-Oklahoma football game in Dallas. The latter treatment benefitted the Heartland Flyer that runs between Oklahoma City and Dallas/Ft. Worth. The engine was repainted in 2023 without the logo, coming out of Beech Grove on February 13, 2023. It was involved with a garbage packer truck on May 25 at Smithson, Indiana on train 51.

Repaired October 2023 and returned to western service on Empire Builder and California Zephyr.

In addition to 157 being wrecked, on June 5, 2023, #155 returned to Chicago from Beech Grove in a refreshed paint job. Meantime #150 moved to the shop in May, 2023, getting a brake job and a repaint.
