MORE ON AMTRAK 174 - MARK B. KENNY

Here is road number 174 from the 2000/2001 Amtrak Genesis order from the GE Transportation Division at Erie, Pennsylvania. All #170-179 were originally delivered in 3G narrow skirt band millenium paint, as part of the group #169-207. Builder stickers also in the high position (but moved back to standard in subsequent overhauls). Steel noses were changed to the bolt-on variety over the intervening years. Engine #174 was the first 3G unit to be restyled in 4G livery, January 2024. During 2024 it also had the name Mark B. Kenny added under the cab window. Kenny was chairman of the negotiating committee for seven terms, working contracts between Amtrak and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He retired December 31, 2023 after it is said to have been a 25 year career as committee chairman. He started with Conrail in 1977, became an engineer in 1979, and became a BLE member in 1981 and moved to SEPTA in 1983 when Conrail turned passenger service over. He then moved to Amtrak in 1985. He is only the third person to have had his name added to a P42 locomotive after Governor Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin, and engineer Mike Kempf who died on the job and was also honored for his service.


Build dates are May and June of 2001. Serial numbers are out of order for #177, which has a May build date but a June road number assignment. Evidently it was bypassed in the assembly process for a week or two before being assigned its road number.

MOVED TO BEECH GROVE FALL 2023 FOR NEW PAINT SCHEME

Engine #174 went to Beech Grove, Indiana on October 30, 2023, and became the first Genesis P42 to be released in Amtrak's new diesel paint scheme on January 29, 2024. Evidently it is evidently planned to repaint the other remaining P42's at some point in the future, so #174 was the prototype. The paint scheme is distinctive, and while the dark blue background seemingly originated in 2014 with the first Chargers produced by Siemens, the red nose carries over from Amtrak's early days, borrowed from the Southern Pacific units it inherited in 1971. No longer will the base color be the platinum mist that Amtrak started using in 1973. This is actually a variation of the new scheme that was first applied to commemorative unit #108.

Unfortunately, Amtrak does not include locomotive or consist information in publicly available tracking data. Not all movements are necessarily captured and there can be errors in the reports we do have. The train number is listed with the sighting date and/or when its train left the originating station.
