OCTOBER 15, 2021
General Electric manufactured the P40/P42 series
of diesel locomotives at Erie, Pennsylvania, during the period 1993-2001. 25+ Years and still rolling! Amtrak purchased 44 P40's, 207 P42's, and 18 dualmodes (the latter with New York State support for Empire Services).

WHY DO THIS

For many years we have tracked as well as possible the movements of Amtrak's P42 Genesis locomotive fleet, along with those few older P40's that are still active at Amtrak. It is time to pass the torch, because other folks are doing a better job than we can.

The information comes from private sightings, mostly from trackside rail cams. Neither Amtrak nor host railroads typically provide such information. Please contact us by email if you want to continue receiving information under the revised regime.

GOODBYE

We've been doing this for a long time, but it seems a good time to wind thing down. Has been fun!

HURRICANE PAMELA MAY DISRUPT SUNSET LIMITED AND TEXAS EAGLE

Flash flooding may be a problem in Texas, Arkansas, and elsewhere, from the remnants of hurricane Pamela. This is a stealthy system that could combine with a cold front, and could catch many by surprise.

HERITAGE UNITS OPERATING OUT OF WASHINGTON

It seems that most of Amtrak's special paint units are operating in the east right now. Do not know if this is by intent, or by accident. Still one regular paint unit leased to CDOT, and another doing test operations in some unusual places in New England last couple days.

LAND BORDERS TO REOPEN NOVEMBER 8

The land borders to the United States will technically reopen on November 8, although except for locals coming to buy staples, grannie and the grandkids, tourists, and other innocents, the rather pourous border really never closed. For truckers, railroaders, and other "essential workers," the borders never closed, nor did the alleged "closure" stop illegals from coming and going.

As yet there has not been any info released on the three Amtrak trains that used to cross the Canadian border. One assumes that the Canadian connections will be reinstated at some point.

The borders had been "closed" due to the spread of virus, although science tells us that the illness came in by aircraft and cruise ship, not much by land. So we will see how this goes in the future, and wonder if government officials have learned anything from the fiasco.

ACTIVIST INVESTORS DEMAND RATE HIKES, FURTHER BREAKUPS, AND LAYOFFS AT CN

CN is now the latest class I railroad to again come under pressure from hedge fund major shareholders. Although Bill and Melinda Gates are the largest individual stockholders of the CN, it does not seem that the pressure is coming from them.

The TCI Fund (Chris Hohn) out of London has been playing and manipulating both sides of the Canadian Pacific / Canadian National attempts to asset strip the Kansas City Southern.

Despite how you feel about government regulation, it is obvious that neither customers, employees, nor national security benefit from hedge fund manipulation and asset stripping of north American railroads. One also has to question why foreign interference is being tolerated in the operation and management of such a vital infrastructure element.

Look for more customer abandonment, job cuts, train-off's, and cancellation of planned capital investments. This apparently has nothing to do with the failure of a proposed KCS merger, and would have happened anyway. Some lines will probably be sold, and others downgraded in order to increase executive retention bonuses and to raise dividends to investors. Old-timers might remember that CN and before that, its merger partner Illinois Central, was one of the first major railroads to abandon its customer base decades ago, forcing shippers onto the highway. The net results to taxpayers will be more infrastructure costs for highway upgrades, while business and consumers will see both higher taxes, as well as more supply chain problems and higher prices. Meantime national defense and security is also at stake as railroads abandon their transportation mission in favor of short-term executive and hedge fund stockholder greed.

We plan to work on the house a little bit this year, so your donations would be appreciated. new drapes from Sears & Roebuck and a little paint will do wonders.
