MORE ON AMTRAK 93

Here is road number 93 from 1997. Engines up to #98 were in the first 1996/97 Amtrak Genesis order from the GE Transportation Division at Erie, Pennsylvania. A second 1997 order was shortly placed for #99-120. Our nighttime shot is at Slidell, Louisiana, on the southbound Crescent. At this same location in 2011 the northbound train 20 had a road crossing incident, which caused the loss of locomotive #80. That crossing was subsequently closed by the State of Louisiana. Engine #93 also went through the interim northeastern variant earlier in its career, one of four in that group, and only one of two in the group to get both versions of high and low skirt millennium styling.

All of Amtrak's starting fleet of 207 P42's have suffered injuries, many of them over and over again. The 90's group had a loss of number 98 in Texas very early but it was rebuilt to serve another couple decades. As of June 2019, #91 was stored dead at Beech Grove...a result of an Empire Builder incident on November 23, 2015, The others were still rostered and active as of August 2023.

Serial numbers for 90-99 are 49628 through 49636 and 49951, with a break between #98 and #99. GE booked a freight locomotive order in between Amtrak's Genesis builds. Sticker dates were and May (for 98 only) and June, 1997 (for the others). After delivery in 1993 style paint, all were eventually refurbished. Road numbers 93, 95, 97, and 98 received northeastern 1998 varient when painted early, while most of the rest received 2001 low skirt bluenose. Engine #87 survived in original garb all the way to 2002. In between, #92 and #93 had low shirt millennium paint applied, mostly likely during 2000. Nose cones were all changed to the bolt-on variety by the end of the decade.

The last new Amtrak P42 (#207) came on the property in 2001. The 90's group mostly escaped ever being tied to any one particular region or service, and had consistently roamed the country until recently, when several of them went to New Haven for commuter duties in the northeast. In early 2023, for instance, #99 was running 400 series shuttles out of New Haven.

Here are some 2023 reports for 93. It remains active as of August 2023. To track a particular train's history, you can go to Dixieland Software and the transitdocs.com website. Unfortunately, Amtrak is willing to report train locations and arrival times, but not consist information. Not all movements were necessarily captured and there can be errors in the reports. The train number is listed with the sighting date.
