General Electric's P40/P42, built at Erie. Pennsylvania proved to be a successful design. The cost was $6 million each (in 2021 dollars). Fifteen older P40's from 1993 ( out of the group 800-843) were subsequently upgraded to P42 standards during 2011-2012 using stimulus funding from the George Bush financial panic. Rebuilt #809 and #823 were wrecked and in October 2019 their carcasses were offered for sale at Beech Grove.
Subsequently three more of the 15 Bush rebuilds have been damaged and taken out of service (as noted below). At least two of them are believed to have been totals, leaving ten remaining potentially active. In late 2020, P40's were removed from one of the Autotrain sets and replaced with P42s. Whether this has longer term significance or not remains to be seen.
Other P40's were sold to Connecticut DOT and were in Shoreline Service (they were being rebuilt in 2020 and renumbered in the 6700 series). Connecticut also picked up several former Amtrak units that had been leased to New Jersey Transit. Survivors from both batches are being retunred in chronological order by original Amtrak numbers, lowest Amtrak number first, renumbered starting at 6701.

Amtrak's former stash of 14 stored P40's at Beech Grove, Indiana, were used as parts sources and offered for sale in December 2018 (800-806, 811, 813, 825, 826, 828). The carcasses were acquired by Larry's Truck & Electric in 2019.
Newer P42's are road numbers 1-207 of the standard units at Amtrak. Canada used 900-921 series road numbers for its small P42 fleet. Theirs were build in 2001 after completion of the Amtrak order. Four Canadians were seriously damaged and rebuilt, but all of the Canadian units remain in service.
All but two of the Amtrak P40/P42 group have had bolt-on nose cones installed, with #108 and 109 being the last originals to be replaced. Via-Rail Canada kept the original nose, but added a third headlight.
The other buyer of the Genesis-cabbed design was the Metro North consortium for dual-mode 3200 horsepower "B32" models on third-rail territory around New York City. Four Connecticut-owned units are in retro-New Haven paint jobs.
Amtrak's P40's were built in 1993. The first ten of New York's dualmodes were built in 1995. Amtrak's road numbers 1-50 (roughly) are from 1996. The 1997 group, more or less, are 50-120.
Road numbers 123-207 were built over the 2000-2001 period, and the second half of the dualmode group also date from 2001. Overall, the oldest Genesis-cabbed GE's are 25+ and the newest are nearly 20 years old.
Because of their age, the fact that Charger locomotives have replaced Amtrak P42's on many state-routes, and because some thought is being given to a rebuild/replace program, there may not be as many P42's coming back into service after wrecks as in the past. The cost of fixing them now is at a tipping point. Below are the losses and some possible losses, so far, listed by road number.

1 - Clearing tracks of snow at Longmeadow, Mass on March 13, 2017. Encountered a snow plow at a road crossing. Moved in CSX freight service September 4, 2017, waybilled to Beech Grove. Carcass offered for sale October 2019.
8 - Struck the rear of NS freight 23M November 30, 2007 at 36 mph north of Englewood junction, while working the Pere Marquette into Chicago. Accident blamed on engineer miscalling a red over yellow signal. Might have been prevented if PTC had been in effect.
21 - Empire Builder July 29, 2013 near Trenton, North Dakota. Trailing unit #91 slightly damaged but returned to service only to be destroyed in 2016. In the 2013 incident, A construction company bulldozer on the tracks without notification to the BNSF. Offered for sale November 2019 in sales offer 2019-02.
47 - Collided with a CSX autorack freight train at Cayce, SC. on super bowl sunday, February 4, 2018. Leading train 91 at the time. On board fatalities wer the engineer and conductor. Engineer Michael Kumpff had name added on #162 (see below).
49 - Fuel system fire December 2011. Remnants offered for sale by Amtrak November 2019 in Sales offer 2019-02.
65 - Semi-trailer/tractor strike April 14, 2016 near Galva, Illinois on Chicago-Quincy train
66 - June 5, 2015 (Heritage-painted unit) hit by a semi-truck load of bacon while on the Texas Eagle in Illinois. Returned to duty early July, 2015 after a nose job at Chicago. Hit again in Illinois in February 2016, this time on a Lincoln Service train near Joliet by a container truck and semi-trailer. Arrived Lumber Street February 27 and moved to Beech Grove on March 17, 2016. The heritage paint job originally on #66 was later replicated on #130.
67 - Dump truck attack October 25, 2018 at Suffolk, Virginia on Norfolk regional. Remains out of service. Finally moved Washington to Chicago on the Capitol Limited in July 2019. To Beech Grove 21-July-2019
70 - Fuel system fire January 2011. Remnants offered for sale by Amtrak in Sales Offer 2019-02.
80 - Hit by a semi-trailer load of military Striker vehicles at Slidell, Louisiana April 2011. Engine #187, also damaged in the wreck, returned to service February 25, 2014. #80 carcass offered for sale at Beech Grove October 2019.
91 - taken out in a road crossing incursion on the Empire Builder with 155 on November 23, 2015. Arrived Beech Grove in freight service February 8, 2016, 155 was repaired 91 was not.
102 - hit a rockslide October 5, 2015 on the southbound Vermonter. One of the last three steel nose units at the time. It went down into a ravine on its side. April 2016 moved in freight service to Beech Grove on a flatcar. Carcass offered for sale at Beech Grove October 2019.
128 - Low boy trailer February 1, 2012 at a grade crossing near Jackson, Michigan. Originally part of the dedicated Michigan pool. Moved to Beech Grove storage on a flatcar. Replaced by #38 in the Michigan pool. Carcass offered for sale October 2019 at Beech Grove.
141 - Fuel system fire November 2011. Moved to Beech Grove where it sat for many years. Carcass offered for sale at Beech Grove October 2019.
143 - Wrecked in Utah 2001, overturned and burned after sideswping a UP freight. Taken off roster, and after several years, was cut up. First P42 loss, when new.
149 - Wrecked in Utah 2001, taken off roster, and scrapped. The second P42 loss, when new. With #143 in sideswipe and fire. Might have been prevented by positive train control?
178 - Fuel system fire February 2011. Moved to Beech Grove, carcass offered for sale October 2019.
185 - March 11, 2015, an oversized trailer with 13 axles was manuvered and parked in front of the Carolinian at Halifax, North Carolina. The driver exited his cab. The rig reportedly weighed 255,000 pounds, and was on the tracks for at least twenty minutes under the direction of the North Carolina State Police before the engineer of train 80 rounded a curve and could react to the tarp-covered load parked in front of him. The resulting impact overturned engine #185 and derailed the baggage car and the first coach. Returned to Chicago May 11, 2015 on CSX Q389. Likely scrap candidate.
200 - Set out Las Vegas, New Mexico 6-October 2017 result of boulder strike on southwest chief. Arrived back Galesburg on BNSF freight 23-November-17. Chicago shop arrival 2-December-17. Arrived BEE 21-DEC-17. Another possible total.
Of the above incidents, three possibly could have been avoided or mediated had positive train control been properly in effect: 143/149 at Wendover, 8 at Englewood, and 47 at Cayce.
OTHERS OUT OF SERVICE OR LIKELY DOWN FOR THE COUNT AS OF JANUARY 2021
There are, on average, 5-10 daily suicides by Amtrak train, two debris or tree-strikes, and on average 2-5 daily locomotive failures affecting service across the system. Tree strikes and mudslides typically occur during or after major weather events, and some are not detected by maintenance of way procedures in time to avoid incidents. On average there is one fairly serious road crossing vehicle crash, per day, sometimes causing death or injury to motor vehicle operators. Injuries to passengers or crew are rare unless larger trucks are involved. If a locomotive disappears for more than a week or two, we will attempt to track down the causes. Two of these are probable total losses, maybe more. Some awaiting insurance adjustment. Others may be in for repair, routine maintenance, and possible repainting.
9 - Leading train 7(with 818 trailing), hit by an agricultural spray rig in eastern Montana, May 29, 2020. Said to be derailed and seriously damaged. Some fire damage, but heavy structural damage to the front end and possible frame warpage. Rerailed 5-29 and moved back east at least to Bainville, MT. The location was at the Lanark crossroads, in rural Roosevelt County about 14 miles into Montana. There are also reports of the cars being pulled west to Culbertson.
Train 7-4 dropped off two locomotives near Williston (179 and 72), which became BNSF special 920-6. Reported replaced wheel sets on some of the passenger cars and began hauling them back to Chicago. Reported in the Twin Cities area on June 7 with a hot box, 2020. Evidently continued Chicago to Beech Grove on July 8/9.
16 - Semi strike (truck load of chicen feed) at Homan, Miller County, Arkansas on Texas Eagle, 10:20 PM March 25, 2020. Train 22-25 vs truck at county road 64 crossing.. Front end damage. Added UP 8831 north to St. Louis and set out AMT16. Moved to UP yard in Texarkana. MDANL-18 (April 2020) Moved to Little Rock. Avon yard Apri 25. Delivered to Beech Grove 5-1-20 by J774-1
18 - REPAINTED 2020. Moved to Beech Grove on June 7, 2020. Not seen out or moving by October 1, 2020. Out in fresh paint October 12, 2020.
20 - Derailment 8-30-19 at Liberty, Texas on train 2. Semi-truck/trailer incident. Moved Houston-Livonia 9-6/7/19 in UP freight service. To Avondale yard by 9-12-19. Move to Amtrak shop in New Orleans likely in September, but not yet confirmed. Presumed to remain there as of February 2020.
24 - Struck by 18-wheeler at FM2754 crossing just west of Lissie, Texas on March 2, 2020. Had #822 trailing. This area where the SP tracks parallel US highway 90 has been the scene of previous incidents. Moved east in freight service (24 and 822) with UP7788. Reported April 15, 2020 headed to St. Louis, at Bald Knob, Arkansas on MHOAS-14. Arrived CSX freight to Avon on Q686-22 with #822. Hawthorne Yard April 25 with 822. Arrived BEE April 28 1:45 AM.
27 - Hit by a truck at Fluker, Louisiana, train 58 of May 14, 2020. This area is known as a graveyard for Amtrak locomotives, and multiple fatalities occur every few weeks in vehicle-train incidents here on the CN. Set out after two replacement light engines were sent from New Orleans. Delayed the train by half a day. Picked up by another light move (engine 26) the following day and returned to New Orleans, where it is believed to be stored..
32 - To Beech Grove December 14-15, 2018 on Hoosier State. No known damage. Back to Chicago 1-27-19. Then hit by a truck May 24, 2019 on City of New Orleans in Yazoo County, MS. Evidently shopped or stored at New Orleans. Reported freight move, sighted Hawhorne Yard 7-27-19. One of three Michigan units believed to be at Beech Grove, the remainder are at New Orleans in mothballs as of October 2020.
35 - Train 59 encountered a semi-truck carrying automobiles south of Terry, MS on August 16, 2019. Moved to New Orleans, then to Chicago on August 24/25, 2019. Moved to Beech Grove 8-31/9-1(hospital train combo with Cardinal). See above.
42 - This special paint unit has had a lot of issues. Encountered a tree in Nevada County, Arkansas on northbound Eagle, August 30, 2020. Set out at Hope. Cars pulled back to Forth Worth by Train 21. Appeared to be ready to be hauled out of Hope on September 4, 2020. Back in service (trail only) briefly in October 2020, then back to Beech Grove on November 22, along with #97. Will see for how long this time.
46 - After failing on the City of New Oleans in late 2020, #46 also went to Beech Grove for traction motor work in November, 2020. Reportedly repainted by January 2021 with new "Connecting America..." logo.
52 - REPAIRED - Incident with a semi at Moody, Texas, while on southbound Texas Eagle in December, 2020. Set out in the vicinity of Temple for a day or two, then to Fort Worth by December 23 and finally seen back in service on Heartland Flyer.
54 - Moved to Beech Grove December 16, 2020. Did not stay. Back on the Chief December 31.
57 - Moved to Beech Grove from Chicago November 29/30, 2020.
59 - Vehicle strike in Martin County, Florida on train 98- of August 18. SUV failed to stop at intersection of Amaryllis and Warfield, Zana, Florida. Set out on siding, picked up August 26, 2020 by Silver Meteor with 202/205. Moved to Chicago on the Capitol, then out September 3 on Train 3. Used very sparingly since.
64 - Encountered a dump truck September 30, 2019, in Kauffman County, Texas, while leading Texas Eagle Train 22. Set out near Mesquite, Texas. Picked up and delivered to Chicago by 140 on T22-3. CHI-BEE 10-5/6
89 - REPAIRED - Encountered a tractor trailer load with big top tent for circus 11-5-18 on westbound Capitol at Gaithersburg, Maryland. To Chicago as third unit on train 29-15, arrived November 16, 2018. To Beech Grove November 22, 2018. Remained BEE as of November 2019. Repaired and repainted, returned to Chicago September 27, 2020.
156 - Special paint unit. Struck by an 18-wheeler dump truck between Scott and Duson, Louisiana on November 3, 2020 (Train 2-1). Set out Lafayette yard. Truck driver stated he had planned to turn onto US 90, which parallels the tracks at this point, but did not make it. Light power move picked up from New Orleans on the 9th (T959/960) with three locomotives, 75, 45, and 129. Remained at New Orleans as of January 8, 2021. Set out at Lafayette off of train 2. Moved NOL in light power rescue operation on November 9. Moved north on train 58 to Chicago January 8/9, 2021 behind 139.
Moved to Beech Grove 1-23/24 on the shuttle (with 160).
160 - Parked at Lumber Street for several weeks, moved to Beech Grove on the shuttle 1-23/24 with 156.
162 - Capitol Limited 12-10-18 vs load of corn near Ranson, WV. Lite move of engines 203 and 121 retrieved on December 13 and towed back to Ivy City. Had Michael Kumff logo. Stored WAS until January 14/15, 2020, then moved dead in tow on train 29 to Chicago with obvious damage. Moved Chicago to Beech Grove 1-18/19, 2020.
173 - Leading Train 2 at Gum Grove, rural Liberty County, Texas, on December 17th around 1 PM with 153 trailing. Encountered a semi at a rural crossing. Suffered front end and wheel damage. UP7984 added. Trainset arrived New Orleans yard about 8 hours late. Train 1 of December 18 departure also delayed several hours as a result. Towed on train 58 to Chicago December 21, 2019. Moved to Beech Grove 12-28/29 with engine 500 and hospital cars attached to Cardinal set.
177 - Silver Star Train 91-30 (2019) encountered a flatbed trailer at a crossing in Lakeland, Florida. The impact separated the lead locomotive from the train, the second locomotive (#40) and, along with other damage, punctured a fuel tank, causing a loss of over 1000 gallons of diesel. Passengers were bussed from the location. #516 later made a lite rescue move to fetch #177 to Sanford. Moved on T29-17(November 2019) Washington to Chicago. Moved CHI-BEE on 11-23/24/19.
184 - Incurred a vehicle strike December 27 on southbound Crescent. Continued to New Orleans.
191 - is another victim of a truck, this time on the City of New Orleans north of McComb. Towed to Chicago, and now awaiting word on repairs. Moved to Beech Grove November 29/30, 2020.
195 - Train 58 north at Ponchatoula on August 10, 2020 at Marine Power Road, truck and trailer. There have been multiple incidents at this private crossing in the past. Sitting in New Orleans as of September 3, 2020, but may have returned to limited service shortly thereafter. Another period of inactivity at NOL, then moved north as second unit of train 58 of October 14-15 2020. Sent to Beech Grove behind #15 on October 17/18, 2020.
505 - (P32 and a 1991-built Genesis precursor) Engine compartment fire at Seattle February 16, 2019. Evidently moved to Beech Grove? This could be the first loss of the 500 series, which has been amazingly long-lived thus far. Amtrak had plans to retire them, but decided otherwise due to their reliability.
705 Refurbished New York unit, returned to service in fresh paint September 27, 2020. The refurbishment of the Empire Service dualmodes is winding down, with perhaps only one remaining to be done.
814 - Encountered a truck and hay trailer at a crossing in connection with the rescue of #130. Not believed to be seriously damanged, but still out of service in December 2020.
818 - Trailing #9 on train 7 of May 28, 2020. Farm implement struck at road crossing, causing serious damage to the leader, and compression damage to the rest of the train. Several of the passenger cars derailed (but did not overturn). Moved east to Bainville siding on May 29. Hospital train June 5-9 moved it to Beech Grove after #9 dropped off in Minnesota with a hot box.
822 - Special paint unit. Was behind #24 on train 2, hit by a semi on March 2, 2020. Has not been reported in service since, so may have also suffered damage and/or require insurance inspections. Believed to be yarded in San Antonio with 24. Moved east April 10 in freight service with UP7788 and Amtrak 24. Spotted April 15 at Bald Knob, Arkansas on MHOAS-14 with #24, headed to St. Louis. Arrived St. Louis April 16, 2020. Moved to Avon April 23 with #24 on CSX Q686-22. Hawthorne Yard April 25 with 24. Arrived BEE April 28, 1:45 AM.

10 - Set off Crescent northbound 1-7/8 at Atlanta after a tree strike near Driskolls, Georgia. Moved back to Washington 1-11/12 on an Atlanta Crescent turn.
Evidently fixed up at Ivy City, and return to service on Virginia regional 1-28-21.
