AMTRAK ROAMER P42 ROAD NUMBERS 46-83 CORRIDOR ASSIGNMENTS Build stickers from GE indicate that Amtrak's road numbers 46 and 48-120 were from the 1997 production year. With 74 units, this was the most prolific of the five years that General Electric delivered P40-P42 Genesis series locomotives to Amtrak. Fifty five of the group are still on the roster, with the remainder retired. Engine #97 has not been seen since a truck crash in Connecticut, and may be joining the retired group. Altogether, 58 or 59 P42's are retired. On December 6, #93 was damaged at Palatine Bridge, Quebec on Maple Leaf. Extent of damage to be determined. There is a debate about #46, which has been an outlier confined to the northeast for decades. It currently wears anniversary stickers. It could have been either a December 1996 or a January 1997 product. Engines #93, and #100 of the northeastern subgroup had not been seen since October. But #93 showed up on Maple Leaf in December, only to suffer a semi truck strike in Quebec. Engine #103 finally was spotted on Downeaster at the end of the month. On Downeaster recently were 88, 89, 100, 103, 109, 113, and 122. Survivors from road numbers 85-120 are usually confined to the east coast. They are supplemented there by Genesis-series dualmodes for Metro North, and other active P42's that rotate in and out of Ivy City. Indeed, more than half of the 145 surviving P42's today are east of the Mississippi, mostly in the I-95 corridor. On any given day about 100-110 units from the original 207 are still running nationwide, with about a 60/40 east to west split. Still in anniversary heritage paint in the northeast are #100 and #108 (along with #130 and #145 from 2001 production). **4G livery began appearing in 2024 on a few. So far #69, #75, #79, #82, and #87 have it from 1997 production. The most recent is #79 on December 5, 2024. Engine #82 is Amtrak's only unit to have worn all four basic GE paint schemes. At least two of these 1997-built roamers are at Beech Grove for heavy maintenance and expected to eventually return. Engine #60 stayed there, but only for a few days. On December 5, #79 returned to Chicago in new 4G paint. It made its first run on the Floridian. We don't know where #97 is. Same with #46 which has been missing for a week and likely is shopped or in protection. Several roamers are also working out of Ivy City, supplementing the 35 or so P42's that are dedicated there. Engine #54 was scorched there in a yard fire November 25. The extent of damage is not known at this time but it could be superficial. Of the 74 units built in 1997, 14 are known to be retired. With #54 and #97 currently out of commission, roughly fifty-five are thusly thought to still be available for use on a daily basis. Known to be operating in revenue service on December 1 were 31 of them, counting the units that are thought to be most recently on Downeaster or in Boston. So far, NEC units 46 90 96 105 108 109 and 118 have not been sighted in December. Engines 114 and 87 were rescue power to pick up the stranded Maple Leaf consist in Quebec. Engines #98 and #119 had run Virginia regionals in early December. Updated through December 11, 2024 by 4rr.com |
