CONTENTS WHERE IS MY FAVORITE AMTRAK P42 LOCOMOTIVE

Our photos are hyperlinks. Clicking on one photo goes to the next. These GE's were developed and produced between 1988 and 2001 as the first computer-controlled diesel powered passenger locomotive. Most recent train assignments for surviving units may be referenced by clicking on the photo links below. For convenience, we have grouped them by age. We are now tracking surviving road numbers 4-83 and 134-207 and omitting 85-132 that stay on eastern commuter routes.

We thank those who have taken the time and effort to make their information available. This site is not affilliated with Amtrak or any other entity, but we do reference asm.trainsitdocs.com, which is the best site we know of for historical information, maps, and gps plots, for Amtrak's passenger trains. That site uses, and improves upon, the "track-a-train" information posted by Amtrak itself. For a quick summary of retired units, click on David's link below.

Last known train assignments are here for western P42's still in operation in 2025. Siemens Mobility "Chargers," are supplementing Amtrak's diesel fleet, and Amtrak had received 50 long distance versions by the end of 2023 and 679 by the end of 2024.
